Today we visited one of the famous “escuelas del milenio”, which are brand new schools the government has constructed throughout different regions of the country. These schools incorporate modern elements of informational technology during the teaching-learning process and use technology as a means to promote education from early development stages. While we were not able to walk into the school today (which requires a 48 hour petition process) we were able to interview three children sitting outside of the barbwire-fenced school. At first wary of two strangers approaching them, the children were quick to open up and speak of their experiences at this school. Elias, Genesis and Jaime (1st grade, 4th grade, 7th grade) really enjoy going to their class, which includes English instruction. They even enjoy their homework. During recess, Genesis prefers to go to the library which has tablets for her to play games on and read over playing soccer outside like her brothers. After talking to their father, we learned he picks them up after school every day-he does not think the two blocks to the bus stop are safe enough for his children to walk to by themselves.
